I don't think I've ever watched a show where they blow me away at every single episode with unpredictability. As if 'Whore' wasn't already jaw dropping enough, 'Party Favors' brought my jaw crashing 10 floors down. This is exactly why I love Spartacus: Blood & Sand. One thing I know for sure about this show right now: NO ONE IS SAFE UNLESS YOUR NAME IS SPARTACUS. Coz there's no way they'll kill of Spartacus himself, right?
I didn't get to put my thoughts down about the previous episode, which was 'Whore'. This is one other thing about Spartacus that I love: their episode titles. Somehow they always manage to boil the entire episode down into a perfect episode title.
One thing for sure, 'Whore' is definitely the point where all hell breaks loose. Spartacus and Ilithyia? Are you kidding me? If you don't call that all hell breaks loose, I don't know what else to call it. I love how all the conniving and treachery fly all over the place in this series. So juicy, so scandalous. It's like the extreme (and brutal) version of Gossip Girl. I knew when we first met Ilithyia in the pilot episode that she was trouble, I just didn't think she'd be THIS MUCH trouble. Bashing her friend's head like she was beating on a cockroach? That was brutal. And yet I sort of giggled in glee during the scene, even if I had to look away a little.
That episode also revealed to me just how conniving Domina is. She literally swallowed her pride and endured a friendship with Ilithyia to gain access to the upper social crowd, and when she finally got into Licinia's favors, she was so ready to dump Ilithyia, hence setting her up with Spartacus and leading Licinia straight to the scene of crime. Sadly she really didn't anticipate that Ilithyia would go psycho and kill her golden goose, leaving her back to square one: stuck with Ilithyia. Except that now she has more control over this little wild minx due to her dirty little murderous secret.
Which led us to 'Party Favors'.......
OMG! THEY KILLED CUPID VARRO!
YOU BASTARDS!
I seriously can't believe they killed Varro! And worse, they made Spartacus kill him! That's crazy cruel! I really was expecting Spartacus to defy and stage a full on rebellion, except that we all know that would end fatally. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE THEY MADE SPARTACUS KILL VARRO. I guess I should've known when they gave us a prelude of the beautiful bromantic friendship of Spartacus and Varro in the beginning of the episode, them fighting in the arena together in a perfect rhythmic sword and chain dance. Then Varro is reunited with Aurelia, by the help of Spartacus. Varro then gives his BFF a hug and A KISS on the head. Spartacus and Varro gave me the same kind of tingles as Dean and Castiel did.
AND IT'S JUST COMPLETELY CRUEL TO GIVE US THAT MUCH CUTENESS IN THE BEGINNING, ONLY TO TEAR IT AWAY FROM US SO BRUTALLY.
Poor Spartacus.
And Ilithyia, WOW... I guess being traumatized and distraught after murdering her own friend didn't really tame her into a milder state after all, it only drove her off the ledge and straight into the valley of more deranged sociopathic behavioral tendencies! Who would've thought she would whisper such cunning notions into the ears of such a young budding boy that would hit 3 birds with one stone: (1) To further bruise Crixus' ego, leading him to hate Spartacus even more, which would increase the chances of him attempting to injure or kill Spartacus one way or another, (2) Killing Spartacus' one and only ally, thus (3) Driving Spartacus into a state of distraught.
POOR SPARTACUS. He kept looking over to his Dominus for help. Those sad eyes, begging his Dominus to rescue him from having to do this heartless deed TOWARDS HIS BEST FRIEND. I did tear up a little for Spartacus and Varro. I really wanted to see more of these Spartacus/Varro combi fights but I guess that was the first and the last.
Rest in peace, Varro, friend and ally to Spartacus. You shall be well remembered, and will be truly missed :(
